HealthSuite
Hackathon

March 6-8, 2015 | San Francisco, CA

Thanks for a great hackathon!

What if we could connect data from personal, clinical, environmental
sources and help consumers become active participants in their health?
And help deliver higher quality care in the hospital or the home?

We challenged developers to create new solutions to these challenges
during our San Francisco hackathon. The event saw 110 attendees and
20 teams competing over one weekend, building prototype apps, and
giving their pitches and demos before the judges.

We were thrilled to see some very creative and innovative ideas,
including our winning team. who won a trip to SXSW Interactive to show
off their idea.

Congratulations to all! Great job!

The winning prototype application named 'MediDash' was developed over one weekend. The solution is a dashboard that brings pertinent patient data from disparate sources in- and outside the hospital together to optimize decision making in clinical care. For example, a radiologist looking at a chest X-ray exam could also use other data of the patient profile such as the respiratory condition. By bridging the gap between professional and personal health data across the health continuum, this solution brings the vision of the Philips HealthSuite Digital Platform to life.

Judging Criteria

You’ll have 3 minutes to present your application (PPT slides plus your demo). Judges will have 2 minutes for questions. We anticipate a lot of teams, so we are holding everyone to this time limit. We will give you practice time on Sunday so you will feel more comfortable before your time on stage. We will have a team of judges that will be evaluating according to the following criteria:

1. Conceptual Design Approach (25%):

  • Ability to articulate targeted pain point(s) around problem space and how conceptual designs address these
  • Clearly defined use case that matches articulated pain points for problem space.
  • Use personas for problem definition and proposed solution
  • Business model/scalability/distribution

2. Technical Feasibility (25%):
  • Feasibility of implementation
  • Solution provided is technically sound
  • Plans for a Beta version are clearly laid out

3. Creativity and Newness of the Idea (25%):
  • The creativeness of bringing patients and providers closer to create better interactions at the diagnosis stage and ensure engagement in treatment and management phase.
  • Did quick Google search to see if idea was new

4. Level of completeness (25%)
Prototype development stage and Presentation:
  • Specific delivery and efforts put in place in the two days of the hackathon.
  • Presentation
Utilization of datasets and resources provided:
  • The creative utilization of HSDP (various APIs and data sets) to create the innovative solution will be considered in the evaluation.

Rules

Here are the rules in general. For a detailed set, see the Terms and Conditions.

1. This hackathon is open only to legal residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia and United States territories who are 18+ or older. All participants will need to show a valid government-issued photo ID at team registration (e.g. driver’s license, passport). The following are not eligible to enter or win the Competition: employees, officers, directors and contractors of Philips and/or any member of their immediate family (i.e., a spouse, parent, grandparent, child or grandchild) or household of any of the foregoing individuals, and hackathon event partners.

2. Pre-registration – Everyone must pre-register as an individual before 6pm Friday, March 6th so we will know who’s coming and how many teams we are projecting. When you arrive on Friday, you’ll be forming teams based on your interest areas; you must be there. Then you will be considered a team registrant/attendee. We will give you more information at that time.

3. Teams: We encourage collaboration; all participants must be part of a team.

          •    Must have 1 person designated as the leader, with at least 4 people

                min/team, 6 people/team max.

          •    There needs to be at least 1 developer role on the team.

          •    The rest of the members can be chosen from designers,

developers, healthcare providers (HCPs), business entrepreneurs, students,

patient advocates, patients/consumers, etc. We believe that it helps to generate

new apps with teams that show a variety of backgrounds rather than having

teams with all the same roles (e.g. 4 developers on a team).

4. All team participants must create an API (“App”) using the “Community Preview” software for the HealthSuite Digital Platform (HSDP).

5. The App created must be original code from the team.

6. You can use whatever tools, platform targets, and environments you are familiar with (Java, Javascript, Eclipse, IntelliJ, iOS, Web, Android, etc.) that may help you for this event.

7. All registrants must be willing to use the APIs listed.

8. App must not have any copyright infringements, misappropriate, or violate any rights of any third party including, without limitation, copyright, including moral rights, trademark, trade secret, or right of privacy or publicity.

9. App must not include information or content that is false, fraudulent, deceptive, misleading, defamatory, threatening, trade libelous, slanderous, libelous, disparaging, unlawfully harassing, profane, obscene, pornographic, hateful, indecent, inappropriate or injurious to any individual, or any third party.

10. App must not include any malware, spyware, viruses or similar harmful code or content.

Hackathon for health

The goal of the competition is to design and prototype an app that supports the collection and communication of health care data (clinical, consumer and environmental) to enable better-informed clinical decisions, more personalized care, and improve and benefit healthcare services in the US.

You will be writing on the HealthSuite Digital Platform (HSDP) and can use whatever tools and environments you are familiar with (Java, Javascript, PhP, iOS, Windows, Android, etc.) that may help you for this event.

We’ve given you clinical, consumer (sensor, mood, pain level, etc.) and environmental data to use create a healthcare based app. The goal is to use more than one data type (e.g. clinical and consumer) for your app.

We will have 6 different areas for you to choose from:

• Elder care (Healthcare at home)
• Care Coordination (Provider side)
• Chronic Disease Management
• Consumer Engagement (Motivation, sustainable,
   feedback to make a difference)
• Employee Wellness (Payer Side)
• Analytics - Solving Data Overload (Dashboards,
  Visualizations)

We will also have associated personas with canned data. As a team, you will create an app and be able to run it in a sandbox.

Note: Prior to the event you can research ideas but you can’t begin coding. All code and artefacts developed at the event should be stored in public GitHub repositories.

Join us in building innovative solutions that encourage prevention and healthy living, speed diagnosis and treatment, and enable better recovery and home care.
